    All in all still a great looking garden. Do you think the yellow sticky fly traps near your melons would help with the fruit fly problem. I saw something about the toothbrush trick too and I plan to buy a cheap battery powered one to use in my hoop house this summer. Happy New Year.

    what a great backyard, good work, shame about the fruit fly you might have to resort to a fly net section in your backyard. Have a good one.

  • emsapowell:

    so GREEN! lol Can’t wait until it’s green again around here!

  • ChrisGrowingOrganic:

    Your so lucky to be able to grow such a wide rang of things this time a year. I’m stuck with all greens and a few frost tolerant peas.

  • mhpgardener:

    I had no idea tadpoles were so aggressive. Carrots looking spiffy. What was it you used for PM?

    @TheProductiveGarden
    Thanks… Think I am over working the beds at the moment so might scale back the production from here until mid February then work them all over & feed them up for Autumn…
    Have a great one…

    @dalecalder2003 Happy New year to you Dale…
    We tried the fly traps & caught 2 a couple of seasons ago… Might be making a trip in a little while to look to see what the local stores have in the way of fly paper & “organic” baits…

  • bnbob01:

    @lifekreator I have fly exclusion bags but totally forgot about them until I read your comment !!!!
    **FACE PALM**
    Have also considered trying to net off some barrels but never got around to it…
    Thanks & hope you have a great one…

    @mhpgardener Hi Bobby..
    PM meaning Pest Management I take it ??
    I spray with Neem but that doesn’t deter the fruit fly much at all unfortunately… I was just replying to Lifekreator below & remembered that we have 3 bags of Insect Exclusion bags but totally forgot about them… Feeling a tad miffed at myself ATM…
    A massive “face palm” moment & a tad embarrassing to tell you the truth…
    Must go & bag up some fruit….

  • mhpgardener:

    @bnbob01 PM…powdery mildew. You said you put something on the carrots I think it was…couldn’t quite get what you said.

  • Hamish121212:

    Hi mate. I have been offered as much horse manure mixed with hay as I can take. How do you think that would go in IBC wicking beds? The corn I put into the first IBC bed is doing well in the fully composted cow manure – but to be honest the fine tilth of the compost has meant it has settled into a pretty hard solid block. The top few inches is pretty hard and dry. But there must be some moisture down lower as the corn is growing well.

  • bnbob01:

    @mhpgardener Oh.. Sorry about the rant Bobby… **blushes**
    Eco Rose….
    Its an Australian product that is about 94% potassium bicarbonate & organic certified…
    If you google “potassium bicarbonate powdery mildew” a bit of info should come up…
    HTH….

  • bnbob01:

    @Hamish121212 I like Horse better as it has more fibre/organic matter in it… You do get more weed seeds germinating in it though… Worms love it so put a handful of worms in there if you have some spare… I just like to hold it back for a while in case the animals have been wormed of medicated… It will still settle a fair bit so might pay to mound the top a bit… I have been using about 1 part horse to 2 parts soil & 1 part Mushroom compost lately…

  • Helioforge:

    Happy new year! It’s summer everywhere over there! The onions are blooming : ) Strawberries are fickle and you’re always going to lose a few of them, just as long as they more than replenish themselves : )

  • combustioncat:

    Surprised that you have so few plants growing in your Aquaponics system – most people seem to grow a much greater density of plants in their systems. How many fish do you have on the go at the moment?

  • bnbob01:

    @combustioncat We only have 9 x 5cm + Goldies with about 1400L at the moment so the nutrient load isn’t huge… I want to get the system cycled before we buy Jade perch to stock it with…

  • bnbob01:

    @Helioforge & a happy one to you as well…
    Have a few runners setting roots down in a pot near the hose so not to worried…
    Have a good one…

  • Veggiepatchinperth:

    looking good! i will be interested to see if your potato harvest is any better than mine.
    I think we planted around the same time but i used an old bag of store bought potatoes so i didn’t expect to do so well anyway..at least you have some moisture in the air over there, in west Aus its so dry now that even watering every day cant keep up.. think i need a shade set up for next summer!! all the best….

  • bnbob01:

    Some of ours are looking like they wait to come out but am waiting until they all die off…
    Bit hotter this week here but **knocks on wood** it has been mild here…
    Have a great one…
