how to build a flower bed retaining wall for an established garden?
i am trying to build a flower bed retaining wall for my already established garden. i am looking for links with videos on how to build the wall. secondly, i was advised to cover the soil with landscape fabric to prevent weed from growing (its currently a problem) but my problem is since i already have plants growing on the bed do i have to dig out the plants, build the wall and then replant them or do i just leave the plants amd build the wall…help
No. Dot use landscape fabric.
To prevent weed growth, place six (6) mil black plastic minimum thickness anywhere weeds could germinate or grow. The black is required to eliminate sunlight which is necessary to sustain growth. Problem is, darkness is required to germinate see so the black plastic must be strong enough to prevent penetration by the strongest weed.
Procedure:
Dig a foundation for the wall down to solid firm earth.
Place the 6 mil black plastic full length along the wall site foundation.
Fold the sheet over the garden plants temporarily.
Lay the wall above the plastic.
Fold the plastic over the wall.
Fill dirt is full height along the plastic covered wall.
Wrap the plastic back from the wall and over the garden making holds for each established garden plant.
Continue to lap the plastic until the garden is completely covered and the wall is secured in plastic on earth side.
Hope this helps.
There is not need to remove the plants. Dig down half a foot or so for the foundation of the wall. Place some plastic down and then put leveling stone (crushed stones) and level off for the wall. Then start to lay your wall.
